Fall of the Western Roman Empire

  • The Western Roman Empire faced many problems near its collapse, including inflammation, hunger, barbarian invasions, inflation and many more.
  • The barbarian invasions are argued by most historians to be the deadliest factor in the Fall of the Western Roman Empire
  • The most notable of these barbarian tribes were the Saxons, the Angles, the Franks, the Alemani, the Burgundians, the Visigoths, the Ostrogoths, the Lombards, the Vandals, the Basques, the Suebi, and the most terrifying of them all the Huns.

  • The Franks conquered the old Roman lands of Gaul, which is today known as France. They later built the most powerful kingdom that would dominate western Europe for many years.
  • The Alemani conquered parts of Germany but were defeated by the Franks.
  • The Saxons and Angles joined together and conquered Britain., and took it from the native Romans and Britons living there.
  • The Visigoths conquered the old Roman lands of Spain.
  •  The Basques and Suebi also conquered lands of Spain but were defeated by the Visigoths. The Ostrogoths conquered Italy, but the Lombards later conquered it and took it from them.
  • The Vandals conquered the old Roman lands of North Africa.
  • The Huns settled in modern day Hungary and terrorized Rome and many other barbarian tribes as well, forcing them to pay tribute.
  • The tribes eventually settled down on the former Roman lands they conquered and built new kingdoms of their own.
